The Face Swells in the Morning: What Are the Reasons and How to Quickly Remove Swelling

Making yourself look divine can be challenging if your face is swollen in the morning. It can give men a sloppy appearance, while ladies struggle to apply eye shadows, paint their eyelashes, and draw precise lines. Cosmetics tend to imprint and smear within the first few hours of application, making it easier to avoid wearing makeup altogether rather than dealing with running eyelids and eyelashes. Fortunately, facial swelling in the morning is usually harmless and resolves itself throughout the day.

Why does the face swell in the morning? Here are some common causes:

  1. Poor sleep quality or lack of sleep
  2. Consuming alcoholic beverages in the evening
  3. Eating dinner that is high in salt or greasy foods
  4. Following a strict diet
  5. Allergic reactions to plant pollen, household chemicals, medications, food, or dust
  6. Experiencing nervous strain or crying before bedtime
  7. Overexposure to the sun, such as sunbathing at noon or spending extended time outdoors

However, in some cases, a swollen face in the morning may indicate an underlying health condition. Cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, and kidney diseases can lead to fluid retention in the body, resulting in yellowish, watery, and soft skin. The face may also appear rounder. Pregnant women often experience facial and body swelling due to the increased load on their bodies.

If you wake up with a swollen face in the morning, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Wash your face alternately with cold and warm water for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Engage in exercises such as squats and jumping, followed by a contrasting shower.
  3. Massage your face using a cold object or an ice cube.
  4. Apply a nourishing mask with green tea extract and aloe for 15 minutes.
  5. Drink herbal teas such as lime, chamomile, or melissa.
  6. Rinse off the mask and apply a moisturizer to your skin.

After around thirty minutes, you can apply makeup using long-lasting cosmetics. To prevent facial swelling in the future, avoid consuming large amounts of liquids and alcoholic beverages before bed. Additionally, reduce your intake of salty foods, maintain a regular sleep schedule, and choose a comfortable low pillow for sleeping. Sleeping with a high pillow can constrict blood vessels in the neck. Regular physical activity also plays a significant role, as a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to various health issues and morning facial swelling. If the cause is an underlying disease, it’s important to seek proper treatment to address the problem effectively.
