Health Trend: MCT Oil

MCT oil: this latest health trend may have weaseled its way onto your Instagram feed or may have caught your eye while you were perusing the isles of the grocery store. But what is it? Should you be supplementing with it? And does it have any real health benefits?

The Whats

MCT is short for medium chain triglycerides, which is the same thing as saying medium chain fatty acids. It is normally made out of coconut oil or palm oil. This colorless and odorless oil stays liquid at room temperature. It’s also absorbed more quickly compared to other fats, making it converted into energy more easily.

The Whys

Does MCT oil have any real benefits? Some research shows that the antibacterial properties found in MCT oil can balance out one’s gut flora which supports immunity. Some believe that it can help suppress hunger and aid in weight loss. Supplementation may even aid in chronic disease prevention through lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels. However, more thorough research must be conducted on MCT oil to make a conclusion on its possible benefits.

The Hows

So you’ve decided to purchase and supplement with MCT oil. Now what? Some people add MCT oil to their morning coffee. But it can also be added to food and smoothies. Athletes even supplement with MCT oil to reduce lactate build-up.

The Bottom Line

Studies are inconclusive on the benefits of MCT oil. And always consult your doctor before taking any new supplements! Is this trend here to stay? Only time will tell!
